Genetic data

Genetic data is personal data related to the inherited or acquired genetic characteristics of an individual. This data gives particular information about the physiology of this natural person.

Genetic data includes: chromosomal, DNA or RNA analysis, or any other type of analysis that enables you to obtain equivalent information.

Genetic data is specific since it is a unique type of information that refers to a single individual, who cannot be de-identified. Even if you separate genetic data from other identifiers (like a name) it is still linked to only one person in the world.

Recital 34:

“Genetic data should be defined as personal data relating to the inherited or acquired genetic characteristics of a natural person which result from the analysis of a biological sample from the natural person in question, in particular chromosomal, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or ribonucleic acid (RNA) analysis, or from the analysis of another element enabling equivalent information to be obtained.”
